Republicans have wanted to pass tax reform for many years now and if you watched the ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House today you could feel the sense of relief in their voices and in their facial expressions. They did it. It was a huge accomplishment. That can’t be emphasized enough. After 8 years of Obama and faced with the reality that the Senate majority is razor thing, the Republicans got something done. It’s not perfect, but it delivers tax cuts to 80% of households and will be rocket fuel for the economy.
Today’s ceremony was filled with a lot of memorable moments but perhaps none as touching as when Sen. Tim Scott came up to the podium.
He was visibly emotional.
From The Daily Caller:
Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina got choked up during a speech about the benefits of tax reform Wednesday, completely stealing the show at what was already a celebratory affair for Republicans and the administration.
The South Carolina senator discussed how Republicans are bringing tax relief to single-mothers, middle-class Americans and will ultimately help many achieve the “American Dream.”
“Well, Mr. President, during one of those conversations that we had where we talked about ways to improve distressed communities throughout this country,” Scott said.
“52 million persons living in distressed communities, and we talked about legislation that could move those communities said yes. And, as part of this tax reform package, the investing and opportunity act has been included, which will bring trillions of dollars into poor communities because of your willingness to listen.”
Here’s the clip.
What’s really cool about this is that Tim Scott hasn’t exactly been the biggest Trump supporter in the world. In fact, he was one of the people who pretended that there was something wrong with Trump’s response to Charlottesville even though most fair-minded people understand that’s a pretty ridiculous conclusion. However, Scott was able to put that behind him and work with the president to deliver results. Pretty cool.
The racist liberal media wasn’t buying it. Huffington Post accused the GOP of using Scott as a prop because the Huffington Post judges people by what color they are and not what kind of person they are.
From Washington Examiner:
Andy Ostroy, a Huffington Post contributor, tweeted about the South Carolina Republican: “What a shocker… there’s ONE black person there and sure enough they have him standing right next to the mic like a manipulated prop. Way to go @SenatorTimScott. #trump #taxscambill.”
“Uh probably because I helped write the bill for the past year, have multiple provisions included, got multiple Senators on board over the last week and have worked on tax reform my entire time in Congress,” Scott wrote. “But if you’d rather just see my skin color, pls feel free.”
A home run for Tim Scott.
Utah Senator Orrin Hatch wasn’t messing around either. In fact, his speech might make you a little teary-eyed. The guy was clearly emotional and proud of the president’s leadership.
Huge day for the GOP.
